How percent progress toward a goal is calculated

Percent progress is how far the current score has travelled along the distance between the baseline and the target — not the score itself, and not the score as a share of 100.

progress = (current − baseline) ÷ (target − baseline), then held between 0% and 100%.

That clamp matters. A student who slides below baseline reads as 0% rather than a negative number, and one who overshoots the target reads as 100% rather than 130% — both of which are what you want in a progress report, and both of which a bare percentage gets wrong.

The formula also handles goals that go down without any special casing. If the target is fewer prompts, fewer errors, or a shorter latency, the target is below the baseline, both halves of the fraction are negative, and the result comes out positive on its own. A baseline of 12 prompts, a target of 3, and a current score of 6 is (6 − 12) ÷ (3 − 12) = 67% progress.

Reading the pace, and why the projection is not a promise

Given a start date, the calculator divides the movement so far by the weeks elapsed and extends that line to the target. It is a straight-line projection from two points, which is the crudest possible forecast — useful for the question "is this pace going to get there by the annual review", useless as a prediction about a particular child.

Progress on a real goal is rarely linear: it steps, plateaus, and regresses over breaks. Treat the projected date as a prompt to look at the data, not as a finding to write down.

What counts as adequate progress

There is no universal threshold. Adequate progress is judged against the goal's own timeline: if a goal is written for one year and you are a third of the way through the year, roughly a third of the distance is on pace. Many teams set a warning band — often around 70% of the expected fraction — below which the goal gets discussed rather than continued.

The one thing to avoid is deciding a goal is met because a single session hit the criterion. Nearly every goal statement carries a stability requirement — three consecutive sessions, two of three data days — and a percentage cannot see it. The workbook version keeps status as something you set by hand for exactly that reason.

Common questions

How do I calculate percent of progress on an IEP goal?

Subtract the baseline from the current score, divide by the target minus the baseline, and express it as a percentage: (current − baseline) ÷ (target − baseline). Hold the result between 0% and 100%. On a goal that moves downward, such as reducing prompts, the same formula works unchanged.

What if the student scored below their baseline?

The formula returns a negative number, which is why it is clamped to 0%. Record the observation as it stands and treat the regression as information — it usually means the goal, the conditions, or the measurement changed, not that progress is literally negative.

Can I use this for a goal where a lower number is better?

Yes. Enter the baseline and target as they are written in the goal — target below baseline — and the calculation handles the direction automatically.

Does 100% mean the goal is met?

No. It means the current score reached the criterion once. Nearly all goals also require the criterion to hold across several sessions before the goal is met, and that judgment belongs to the team, not to a formula.

Is anything I type here stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely inside your browser. There is no account, no server call, and nothing is logged — which is deliberate, because this is student data even when it is only two numbers.
