How the numbers work
Three calculations, none of them complicated, all of them easy to get wrong at 11pm the night before a renewal deadline:
remaining = max(0, required − earned) · progress = earned ÷ required,
held at 100% · pace = remaining ÷ months left
The pace figure is the useful one. Twelve hours outstanding is alarming in the abstract and entirely manageable at 1.8 hours a month — or genuinely urgent at six hours a month. Same shortfall, different decision, and the only difference is how much time is left.
The subject-specific requirement is what catches people
Most boards require a slice of the total in a named category — ethics, jurisprudence, supervision, or a state-specific topic. It is entirely possible to finish the cycle with more than the total hours required and still fail to renew, because none of them were in that category.
Track it separately from the total, and treat it as the deadline that matters. It is usually the smaller number and always the harder one to fix late, because the qualifying courses are fewer and often only run on a schedule.
If you hold more than one credential
Clinicians who hold a state licence plus a national certification — or licences in more than one state — are running several cycles at once, with different totals, different renewal dates, and different rules about what carries over.
The trap is double-counting: one course can often satisfy two requirements, but not always, and assuming it does is how a cycle comes up short. Work each credential out separately, then note which single course you are counting twice and confirm both boards accept it. Common questions
How do I know if I am on track for my CEU renewal?
Compare the share of hours you have earned against the share of the cycle that has elapsed. If you are a third of the way through the renewal period you want roughly a third of the hours done. The calculator flags you as behind when earned hours fall meaningfully short of elapsed time.
How many CEU hours do I need per month?
Divide the hours you still owe by the months left before renewal. The calculator shows this per month and per week, which is usually the figure that turns a deadline into a plan.
What is a subject-specific CEU requirement?
Hours that must be earned in a named topic — commonly ethics, jurisprudence or supervision. They sit inside the total, not on top of it, and exceeding your total hours does not satisfy them.
Can one course count toward two licences?
Often, but not always, and the boards decide. Where you plan to count a course twice, confirm with both boards first — assuming it carries is a common way to come up short in a cycle.
